A house resting on unstable soil may shift and settle. To correct the problem, galvanized steel piers are screwed into the ground and attached to the foundation with brackets.
This transfers the weight of the house to stable soil deep in the ground.

Another form of pinning  uses helical anchors to straighten poured concrete walls.

A steel retaining plate bolted to an anchor allows for the adjustment and  retention of the repair

Block walls may need the use of additional steel bars to enable straightening .
